The Scale of the Disaster
Figures are still being confirmed as search and rescue continues, and vary somewhat by source. Aggregated from Direct Relief, UN OCHA, and Nepali government reporting as of Sept 4, 2026.
A natural disaster of this scale has no precedent in Nepal’s history, and the rescue and recovery effort is extraordinarily difficult: Nepal is landlocked and already depends on imports for most of its food and water. The flood has damaged the country’s own freshwater sources and food supplies, leaving communities even more reliant on resources brought in from outside. More than 30,000 Nepali security personnel — alongside police, military, and volunteer rescue teams from several countries — are working around the clock to search, rescue, and rebuild, and they need food, clean water, fuel, and supplies to keep going too. So do the parents and families holding everything together while all of this unfolds.
