As of 2026, federal tracking data reveals that an estimated 1.55 million to 4.2 million children and youth experience homelessness in America annually. According to the U.S. Department of Education, public schools have identified a record-high 1,548,191 K-12 students experiencing homelessness, with roughly 85% of them surviving in “doubled-up” shared housing due to severe economic hardship. Additionally, broader tracking by Youth.gov and the National Conference of State Legislatures establishes that 4.2 million youth and young adults face housing instability each year, a figure that includes approximately 700,000 unaccompanied minors living without a parent or legal guardian.
